PINEAPPLE MANGO SMOOTHIE MARTINI


The Pineapple Mango Smoothie Martini

It was hot and I thought a smoothie would be a great late day refresher but it was also nearing happy hour so I decided to make another martini smoothie! I had done before when I had some ripe fruits and leftover juices and it was quite successful.

I thought the coconut, pineapple and mango rums would be a perfect fit for the banana and pineapple flavors and I thought a bit of lime would lend a little tang plus I needed my creamy element. I always have frozen limeade and heavy cream around for one of my favorite cocktails, the Key Lime Pie Martini, so I was good to go.

I tossed the whole kit and kaboodle into a blender with some ice, then took a small taste and added the powdered sugar for a bit more sweetness. You can test your mixture and leave this out if you prefer.

This is also very easy to convert to a non-alcoholic martini recipe - just leave out the rums! Needless to say, like any smoothie recipe, you can toss in any fruits you happen to like - there aren't too many fruits that don't go well with rum. You can also switch out the rum for the same flavors of infused vodkas as martini smoothies are pretty forgiving as far as flavor mixtures are concerned.

Want to make it a healthy organic martini? Use organic fruits and juices, substitute honey or another natural sweetener for the sugar and replace the cream with a plain organic yogurt! There is also a trend for distilling organic liquors out there but more on that later.

PINK FLAMINGO MARTINI



It's summer, it's hot and all I can think of is a vacation near lots of water. If you want to find water just follow a colony of Flamingos because that's where they live! (Or you can also just park yourself at the pool in the Flamingo Hotel in Vegas. . . . .)

Today's martini is the PINK FLAMINGO MARTINI inspired by that beautiful pink water bird with the long neck and legs. Make a beeline for a flamingo colony and you'll be cooling your feet in water and sipping this flamingo inspired pink martini alongside hundreds, maybe thousands of these lovely creatures. (Unless you decided to opt for Vegas - then you'll be sipping your martini around a bunch of hung over gamblers who are hanging at the pool because they lost all their money!)

Why are flamingo's pink? Because their diet is rich in alpha and beta carotene, consisting mostly of diatoms, seeds, blue-green algae, crustaceans, and mollusks. Why is The Pink Flamingo Martini Pink? Because of the Grenadine.

The Original LEMON DROP MARTINI Cocktail Recipe

LEMON DROP MARTINI COCKTAIL RECIPE

The Lemon Drop cocktail was born at Henry Africa's in 1970. In amongst the ferns and maturing hippie population of San Francisco, the elder statesman of the designer martinis emerged tart and sweet and deliciously dangerous. It was an exciting new cocktail for exciting new times and I happily participated. 

This recipe is the closest to the drink I remember from Henry Africa's. Forget all the claims that citrus vodka is traditional or "required" because CITRUS VODKAS DID NOT EXIST IN 1970! Flavored vodkas and their like were decades - and at least 1 hipster grandchild away - from existence when the original LEMON DROP made its debut in The City By The Bay. I personally watched* as the bartenders poured in the Smirnoff and triple sec, added simple syrup with a barspoon and I saw the fresh lemon juice being squeezed into the cocktail shaker. And, by the way, it was not called a Martini, just a Lemon Drop, because back then a martini was gin and vermouth.

This is the Lemon Drop I remember enjoying 50 years ago at Henry Africa's (minus the candied lemon rind which I added just because I like candied lemon rind.)

LEMON DROP MARTINI Cocktail Recipe with Ingredients and Instructions

The original
LEMON DROP
(MARTINI)

INGREDIENTS
1-1/2 Oz. Vodka
1/2 Oz. Triple Sec
2 Tsp. Simple Syrup
1 Oz. Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice

Garnish: Sugar rim, Candied Lemon, Cocktail Cherry

Tools: Cocktail Shaker

Glass: Cocktail (Martini)

DIRECTIONS
Rub the rim of the glass with a lemon wedge then sip into sugar.
Chill the glass in the freezer.
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until well chilled.
Strain into the chilled glass, garnish and serve.

Non Alcoholic Cotton Candy Martini Recipe

I received a request from Ellen yesterday on how to make a non-alcoholic Cotton Candy Martini. She had read my post "How To Make Non-Alcoholic Martinis" but wanted more specific instructions on how to convert the Cotton Candy Martini.
Ellen, try this recipe for a

NON ALCOHOLIC COTTON CANDY MARTINI

2-1/2 Ounces Raspberry Flavored Soda or Pop
1/2 Ounce Raspberry Flavored Syrup
(the kind you find in a coffee bar - Torani and DaVinci are 2 well known brands)
A splash of Grenadine
The Cotton Candy or the Cotton Candy Jelly Bellies for Garnish

Chill your glass as usual but combine the liquid ingredients in a pitcher with some ice and STIR instead of shake then pour into your martini glass and garnish.

Here's a few additional tips and hints:
  • If you are making both alcoholic and non-alcoholic martinis at a gathering garnish them differently so people will know which is which.
  • You can change the flavorings of both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic Cotton Candy Martinis by simply changing the flavors of the sodas, syrups and liquors - replace the raspberry flavored ingredients with cherry or berry or orange, etc., then leave out the Grenadine and use a different colored sugar syrup. Torani and DaVinci both come in a multitude of flavors and colors!
  • Soda pop, ginger ale and club soda are good replacements for the effervescense of Champagne or sparkling wines and many of these come in fruit flavors that can replace the fruit flavored vodkas and rums.

My Très Chic Martini is entirely French, from the Champagne and the Chambord (a French raspberry liqueur) to the Crème de Cassis (a black currant flavored liqueur first produced by French monks as a cure for snakebite) and the French crystal martini glass it should be served in!

You’ll note I do not say “French Champagne.” That is because if the bottle says Champagne it can only be from the Champagne region of France. Anything else, by law, is simply a sparkling wine made in the “Méthode Champenoise.”

The Très Chic Martini is a lovely color of pink, a very fashionable color of pink, perfect for any haute couture runway and gorgeous in a lovely French Baccarat crystal martini glass – C’est Très Chic for the City of Lights, Non?

If this doesn't bring back memories of the Arc de Triomphe, The Seine, La Tour Eiffel and shopping for French shoes what will? Hopefully it will also bring back some memories of that Parisian hottie you met at the Louvre.

Imperial Coffee Martini on Day Six of The World Martini Tour


The drink I most associate with Vienna is coffee. I had the best coffee there I’ve ever had (with the one exception of Jamaican Blue Mountain), so I have created a coffee martini for the Imperial Martini. Honestly, the coffees I enjoyed in that city were fit for a king! I probably would have put on 50 pounds from all the Melanges and Mazagrans I drank if it hadn’t been for all the walking I did to get to them!

This Imperial Martini is inspired from the Mazagrans which are a cold version of a Flaker (coffee, rum and whipped cream). Now I get to remember Vienna with a martini!

I had a lot of sausages too – there are little snack bars all over call "Würstelstand" where you can get an authentic “Frankfurter (aka the Wiener Wurstel) or a variety of hot sausages to munch on.

Oh come on, you didn’t really want a sausage martini did you??

ART NOUVEAU CHOCOLATE MARTINI - Brussels, Day Five
The country of Belgium is famous for it’s exquisite chocolates and, therefore, my Brussels Martini recipe is – of course! - a Belgian chocolate cocktail! One of the most well known brands of chocolate and chocolate liqueur, Godiva, is made in Belgium so this recipe features that brand. An interesting historical fact about Godiva - it was founded in Brussels and named after the famous Lady Godiva whose legendary ride through the streets sans clothing saved her subjects from an unfair tax burden!

I’ll bet you thought I was going to give you a Brussels Sprout Martini, didn’t you??? Yes, Brussels sprouts, at least the modern day versions, were cultivated in Brussels, most probably from ones brought there by the Romans, and date back at least 400 years. . . . but you don't really want to drink Brussels sprouts do you? Chocolate - especially Belgian chocolate - is much better, right? But I will tell you that Brussels sprouts can be nice as a garnish in a savory martini - they look like little mini cabbages on a martini pick, try plopping one in that classic gin martini you're having tonight instead of an olive!

Another food we’re all familiar with had it’s origins in Belgium as well – French Fries! Nope, not French – so in all fairness the next time you drive up to a Mickey D’s or a Burger King you should order a large order of Brussels Fries! Belgium is also well know for it’s tapestries and lace, as well as some pretty darn good beer!

The city of Brussels, founded over a millennium ago, boasts the wonderful Grand Place marketplace and the remarkable Atomium, a structure of nine steel spheres connected by tubes which contain escalators that will take you to the top of the structure.

World Martini Tour - Day Three: LONDON GIN MARTINI

London Classic Gin Martini

Whenever I think of London and cocktails I think James Bond and English Gin. Whenever I think English Gin I think of a classic martini which brings me right back to the famous James Bond line, "shaken, not stirred." Which then drives me crazy because, as I've written many times before, you do NOT shake a classic gin martini - you STIR it. Shaking bruises the delicate juniper notes of the gin.

I also think quite fondly of friendly pubs, The Beatles and walking on that famous walkway on Abbey Road, fish and chips served in newspaper and Mod fashion of the sixties. Before I ever visited England I was influenced by that fashion trend and the British Invasion. I spent the better part of 2 months babysitting money on a pair of Beatles style Go-Go boots, ironed my hair to brittle straightness and played The Beatles on my Hi-Fi until I drove my parents crazy.

When I finally got to visit London the first place I went was to the Abbey Road Studios in St. John's Wood to walk across the famous zebra stripped roadway just like the Beatles did on the cover of their final album, Abbey Road. The walkway is not in the same location as it was when The Beatles took that iconic photograph, it was moved a bit in the 1970s but it is still there and you can still strut across the street with your arms swinging wide in tribute to the Fab Four.

The next thing I did was get myself over to Piccadilly to check into my room and then for Tea at the Ritz (if you want to do this too be sure to book well in advance). After that I took myself off on a shopping trip to Fortnum & Masons (another great place to have tea, btw), Simpsons (no longer there sadly) and other famous shopping stops.

My favorite thing to do when I travel is poke through shops, eat and drink. I'm more of a gastronomic tourist than an historical one, but I did eventually make it around to all the "must sees" like Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Windsor Palace and did my obligatory tours of outlaying areas as well - but I could easily have spent all my time shopping in Piccadilly and Carnaby Street and eating and drinking all over the city!

I think I drank more gin martinis and tea in London than I will the rest of my life and more warm beer than I'll ever want to drink again - maybe that's why I prefer my martinis in the designer mode these days, lol.

World Martini Tour - Day Two: BERLIN, The Underground Martini

 
 
The Germans are known for their schnapps, especially the peppermint flavored ones, but they also have a few cinnamon and apple flavored schnapps which are quite nice.
Apfelkorn (originally called AppelKorn) was created in the 1970’s by Hans and Friedrich Berentzen as a result of an underground trend of a younger generation of drinkers. During the mid seventies an underground of young club goers were drinking a cocktail of apple juice mixed with “Korn” which is a liquor made from grain. The Berentzen’s saw a niche market for an apple flavored Korn and ApfelKorn was born!

I suppose the Wild Turkey is a bit outside of the Berlin underground but Bourbon and apple just blend so nicely together that I couldn’t resist. My father’s family has its roots in Kentucky and I am a died-in-the-wool believer that the best whiskey in the world is made there, I drink no other Bourbon. “All Bourbons are whiskey but not all whiskeys are Bourbon!”

However, Germany, the home of the famous Brandenburg Gate, beats the heck out of Kentucky for beer!

Limoncello meets Campari in this Roman Inspired Martini


 WORLD MARTINI TOUR - DAY ONE, ROME

Italy has almost as many famous liquors as it has famous sexy cars. Among them are Lemoncello a distinctive lemon liqueur, and Campari, an infusion of bitter herbs, aromatic plants, and fruit. This Roman inspired martini uses both these Itailian liqueurs for a truly good martini that makes you understand the term “La Dolce Vita” which literally translates to “The Sweet Life”

The fresh orange juice and Limoncello are a nice balance to the bitterness of the Campari and the combination of ingredients gives you a lovely martini just about the shade of a Roman sunset viewed through the ruins of the Colosseum from the Gladiatori Hotel Palazzo Manfredi. A couple of these and you can almost imagine the roar from the Colosseum crowd two thousand years in the past.

The Cafe Au Lait Martini

CAFE AU LAIT MARTINI RECIPE

The Cafe Au Lait Martini is a creamy martini with a little kick of caffeine for some extra punch. It's one of my favorite coffee drinks, second only to my old favorite of an Irish Coffee.

CAFE AU LAIT MARTINI RECIPE with ingredients

MARTINI
A Coffee Martini to Perk You Up

INGREDIENTS
2 Oz. Vanilla Vodka
1 Oz. Coffee Liqueur
1 Oz. Heavy Cream

For The Rim: Teaspoon of Instant Coffee, 1/4 Cup of Sugar

Garnish: Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans

Tools: Cocktail Shaker

DIRECTIONS
Dip the rim of the glass into some coffee liqueur and then into the instant coffee and sugar mixture. Chill the glass in the freezer.
Add ingredients to an ice filled cocktail shaker, shake until chilled, strain into the chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with the chocolate covered espresso beans and serve.

FROZEN CAFÉ AU LAIT COCKTAIL
You can turn this into a spirited frozen coffee confection by using ice cream in place of the heavy cream and using a blender instead of a cocktail shaker. It's a wonderful late day treat on those dog days of summer when the mercury is rising and your energy is melting. I've even been known to freeze any leftover coffee from the morning and toss in a few of those as well.

BLOODY MARTINI - A Unique Bloody Mary Martini with Fangs!



Today I'm featuring the Bloody Martini - a "martini-ized" version of a Bloody Mary Cocktail. I tweaked the classic tomato - vodka cocktail a bit by using Clamato juice instead of tomato juice and left out the celery salt but feel free to tweak it right back if your prefer the classic version.

Need I say this is the perfect martini for all you Twilight and Lestat fans out there???

You can garnish this with the tomato wedge or try out a bit of spicy pepper, a celery stalk, a couple of pickled garlic cloves or mushrooms, or even a pickled yellow wax bean - another of Brad's tweaks!

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce you to the real Bond, James Bond Martini? Direct from the 1953 edition of "Casino Royale" by Ian Fleming:

"A dry martini,' he [Bond] said. 'One. In a deep champagne goblet.'


'Oui, monsieur.'

"Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?"

The Martinez - Is this the very first martini?

MARTINEZ Martini Cocktail Recipe

The Birth of the Martini is a bit of a mystery but it is very likely that The Martinez was the true beginnings of this King of Cocktails.

The Martinez cocktail can be traced back to the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco in the year 1862. The story goes that the bartender at the Occidental at the time, Jerry Thomas*, made the drink for a gold miner heading out to the small town of Martinez, California.

Thomas' book, The Bon Vivant's Companion published in 1887, offers the first print version of the Martinez which consisted of 1 dash of Boker's Bitters, 2 dashes of Maraschino liqueur, 1 Pony of Old Tom gin, 1 wine glass of Vermouth, garnished with a slice of lemon and an optional dash or so of gum syrup for extra sweetness.

I personally love a Martinez, finding it more complex and interesting than a Martini.

DIRECTIONS
Stir ingredients with ice until chilled.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish and serve.

If you prefer your cocktails a bit dryer try replacing the Cinzano sweet vermouth with Punt E Mes. If you want it definitely dryer drop the sweet vermouth to 3/4 an ounce and add 3/4 an ounce of dry vermouth like Noilly Prat.

History of the Gibson Martini - Exactly who did invent it?




The birth of the Gibson is swathed in mystery as several people claim to have invented this historical martini.
The most common tale surrounds Charles Dana Gibson – the illustrator who created the famous Gibson Girls paintings - and his challenge to bartender Charley Connolly, of the Players Club of New York City, to “improve” the classic martini recipe. Connolly’s answer was simply to substitute the cocktail onion for the olive which he then named after Gibson.
Another tale revolves around a Prohibition era American diplomat – also named Gibson – who, as a teetotaller, drank a water martini with the onion to distinguish it from the alcohol laced drinks of his companions.
A third story, from Charles McCabe of the San Francisco Chronicle, attributing the creation of the Gibson to Walter D. K. Gibson. In McCabe’s 1970s interview Allan P. Gibson, great-nephew of W.D.K. Gibson, stated that his great-uncle created the Gibson at the Bohemian Club sometime in the 1890s. This would seem to be the most authenticated version as there is a mention of it by Ward Thompson, another Bohemian Club member, that was supposedly recorded in print in 1898.
No matter the provenance of this now historical onion version of a gin martini, the cocktail itself is here to stay and a very entertaining part of cocktail lore.

Here is the most classic cookie cocktail of them all,
The Chocolate Chip Cookie Martini.

If you love your chocolate chip cookies here is a way you can enjoy them in a martini glass. This is a quadruple chocolate threat of a cocktail with both white and dark Creme de Cacao, chocolate infused vodka and a rim of crushed chocolate chip cookies. The cake vodka is what makes it taste like a cookie.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Martini Cocktail Recipe with Ingredients

CHOCOLATE CHIP
COOKIE MARTINI

INGREDIENTS
1/2 Oz. White Creme de Cacao
1/2 Oz. Dark Creme de Cacao
1 Oz. Chocolate Vodka
1/2 Oz. Cake Vodka
1 Oz. Heavy Cream

Garnish: What else?
A Crushed Chocolate Chip Cookie Rim and a Mini Chocolate Chip Cookie!

DIRECTIONS
Rim glass with one of the chocolate liqueurs and some crushed chocolate chip cookies then chill glass in the freezer.
Add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake well, strain into the chilled cocktail glass then garnish with the mini chocolate chip cookie.

The Fourth of July Martini is an explosive experience!



The Fourth of July Martini should get the fireworks started in your mouth - it's rimmed with Pop Rocks! Yes, I said Pop Rocks. Notice I used the Grenadine as the "glue" for the pop rocks rim - that's because it's more syrupy and will hold the chunkier rimmers better. It also is less likely to set off the pop rocks like lemon juice or one of the liquors.

However, if the Pop Rocks still start to explode while you're rimming the glass like a couple of mine did you can always just toss them in just as you serve the drink. Then it's like a fireworks display in the martini instead of in your mouth!

Enjoy - it's a fun, fruity martini with a nice red color from the grenadine. If you can find them it might be fun to toss in a blue Maraschino cherry instead of a red one!
