Happy National Whipped Cream Day - The Whipped Cream Martini

WHIPPED CREAM MARTINI Cocktail Recipe

Celebrate National Whipped Cream Day with this Whipped Cream Martini, a cocktail that features whipped cream flavored vodka.

I've used both Pinnacle's Whipped Cream Vodka and Smirnoff's Whipped Cream Vodka and both will work in this cocktail.

I've seen rumblings lately from Beam Suntory that they will be discontinuing some of their Pinnacle flavored vodkas and hope the Whipped Cream is not among them. As mentioned in my review of Pinnacle's Whipped Cream, this is a surprisingly good flavored vodka which tastes like actual whipped cream. It's a richer, creamy alternative to vanilla vodka and I keep it on hand expressly for this reason. It made my job pretty easy when creating this cocktail, though I did add a tiny splash of white chocolate liqueur for a slightly deeper flavor profile and a dash of salt to balance the sweetness.

All About KIWIS for NATIONAL KIWI FRUIT DAY

Despite it's odd, fuzzy appearance, I think the Kiwi Fruit rocks the Casbah - it tastes a little like the love child of a strawberry and a melon. It's sweet and juicy but also has a unique little tang all it's own.

A LITTLE BIT OF TRIVIA ABOUT THE KIWI:
Originally called called the Chinese Gooseberry, then the Sunny Peach, the Kiwi fruit (Actinidia chinensis) was named after a flightless bird native to New Zealand - the Kiwi Bird - as a marketing strategy to associate the fruit with New Zealand. Originally from the Yangtze Valley in China, the "Chinese Gooseberry" was brought back to New Zealand by Isabel Fraser in the early 1900s. There are over 400 varieties of this vine fruit which is grown through the late Spring to early Fall months.

National Kiwi Fruit Day is celebrated on the first day of winter every year. Not to be confused with National Kiwi Day aka National Waitangi Day, which is a public holiday held on the 6th of February in New Zealand to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document.

Of interesting note, the people of New Zealand are often referred to as Kiwi's as well.

SOME OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF KIWI FRUIT:
Kiwi fruits are rich in many vitamins, flavonoids and minerals.
Kiwis are high in fiber.
When kiwi juice is mix with water and vodka it can be use as astringent to help tighten and tone the skin.
Kiwi fruit can help prevent age related macular degeneration.
Kiwis are rich in phytonutrients which prevent blood clotting and control fatty acid levels in your blood.
Kiwi fruit is high in potassium which helps prevent high blood pressure.
The seeds are edible and highly nutritious.

FRUITCAKE MARTINI - A Holiday Cocktail

I'm not against fruit or cake but when you dry up the fruit and stick it inside a dense, brick like cake neither the fruit or the cake are well served. I'm sure there's a fruitcake recipe out there somewhere that's good, I've just never been lucky enough to have gotten one of those.

That being said, I turned my frown upside down and turned those fruitcake flavors into a pretty tasty holiday cocktail.

The
FRUITCAKE
MARTINI

INGREDIENTS
2 Oz. Cake Vodka
1/2 Oz. Pineapple Rum
1 Oz. Triple Sec
1 Oz. Cranberry Juice

Garnish: Small Cube of Fruitcake, Drunken Fruits*

DIRECTIONS
Add the ingredients to an ice filled cocktail shaker and shake until chilled.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish and serve.

* DRUNKEN FRUIT RECIPE

Fill a small, really clean glass jar about 3/4 full with a variety of dried fruits.
Fill the rest of the jar with vodka, rum, whiskey or brandy (I like to use one of the spirits from the cocktail I'm making but it's not an iron clad rule.)
Seal up the jar and let sit at least four hours, or overnight is better and a few days really gets your fruit looped.
These can be stored in the refrigerator for several months but you'll probably use them up long before.
They're also great on ice cream and can be added to cake and cookie batters.

My little ode to those fruitcakes I've received in the mail:

CHOCOLATE COVERED COCKTAILS

Who doesn't love anything covered in chocolate? Whether you prefer chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered bananas, chocolate covered nuts or chocolate covered cherries, there's a cocktail here for any of your chocolate covered cravings.

(though technically I didn't name it chocolate covered it qualifies):

Need MORE Chocolate Covered Stuff?
from Mr. Pork himself, Michael Symon, Iron Chef via Food Network.

CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS
Ingredients:
1 large bag of chocolate chips, bag of salted pretzels
Equipment:
Double boiler, parchment or wax paper lined cookie sheet.

Instructions:
Melt one package of dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips in a double-boiler on a medium heat. Be sure to keep water and moisture out of the melting chocolate so it doesn't seize up. Stir until all the chips are completed melted then just start dipping your pretzels!  You can dip all the way or just part of the way. (Personally I like to keep a little part un-dipped as it makes the dipping procedure much easier.)  Shake off the excess (here you can dip in some fun things like sprinkles or nuts if you want), then place on your lined cookie sheet to cool in the fridge.

And don't forget about some
