Brandy Old Fashioned - Classic Cocktails

The Brandy Old Fashioned is a cocktail that I was introduced to by a lovely lady who was a neighbor of mine decades ago. I was going to San Jose State and living downtown in an apartment near the police department. It was a great old apartment building with wonderful architectural accents so it was worth all the sirens at all hours of the day and night.

My neighbor, Mrs. Smothers, was a grand, older lady who happened to have been one of the first female deputies in the area at a time when women were still relegated to home and hearth. She was a kick and an inspiration to a young woman like me - I was career minded and wanted to be a professional artist.

Mrs. S invited me over one evening for a "cocktail" and I accepted. Her apartment was across from mine, reversed in layout but our decors were like us - separated by decades and a lifetime of memories. Her memories were all about her home while mine hadn't been made yet. My apartment was modern, bright and furnished from second hand shops, hers was lace, antiques and photos of famous people and places. I felt like I had walked into a movie set from another era and I loved it.

After I arrived and sat down, Mrs. S tottered over to her kitchen and mixed up a couple of drinks. She told me they were Brandy Old Fashioneds and were her favorite, did I like them? I said I'd never had one but was willing to try. She put a couple of extra cherries in mine - I loved it and it's been a favorite cocktail of mine ever since that night.

Whenever I have a Brandy Old Fashioned, I raise my glass to Mrs. S and remember those happy hours filled with her memories and those cocktail dates that are now a nostalgic memory.

Another Classic Cocktail - The Manhattan as a Martini

The Manhattan was actually a favorite classic cocktail of mine when I was in my twenties - probably because it used the Maraschino cherry liqueur, I loved Maraschino cherries a lot a few decades ago.

Recently I revisited this cocktail and poured it into my favorite Lolita Cherry Martini glass. Though bourbon is not one of my favorite alcohols I enjoyed it and it brought back a lot of memories of the seventies and my disco days! It also gave me another chance to use my Homemade Maraschino Cherries.

If you like the idea of martinis but prefer whiskey to vodka or gin try this classic cocktail out - maybe it will bring back some memories for you too.

MORE CLASSIC COCKTAILS - Rusty Nail Martini

The Rusty Nail is a "duo" cocktail, a drink comprised of only two ingredients. Here the components are scotch and Drambuie. Drambuie is made with aged malt whisky, honey and a secret blend of herbs and spices. The name Drambuie is actually a Gaelic phrase - an dram buidheach which means the drink that satisfies. For an interesting history of this liqueur check out Drambuie on Wikipedia.

Serving this in a martini glass without ice technically makes this a Straight Up Nail as a Rusty Nail is generally served "over" or "on the rocks", both terms for on ice. The mnemonic device bartenders use to remember the ingredients for a Rusty Nail is "shoes dummy" but since I've never attended bartending school I can't tell you why those two words would trigger the memory of scotch and Drambuie! It's an interesting fact though, huh?

Anyway, if you want to try out a scotch based classic cocktail, the Rusty Nail is a good one if you're into trying out retro cocktails!

Raspberry Thyme Martini - Herb Infused Martinis

http://themartinidiva.com

This Raspberry Thyme Martini is really quite good and I'm not even that fond of thyme. The key to the whole thing is just a bit of thyme because of the earthiness of this particular herb. The acid from the lime juice, the sugar and the fresh raspberries blend really well with that earthiness and make for a very refreshing Spring or Summer cocktail that incorporates a fresh herb from the garden.

It's a really pretty martini too and one that will intrigue your most sophisticated tipple.

LEMON BASIL MARTINI - Herb based Martini with a twist!

I planted some lemon basil in my herb garden recently, an herb I love using for cooking chicken and fish especially. When I was chopping it the wonderful lemon aroma wafted up to my nose and I suddenly thought what a nice herb martini it might make. I was right!

These Lemon Basil Martinis are delicious and they're a great starter for a nice entree that also features Lemon Basil. I know many of you are thinking, "basil martinis?" but this is lemon basil, a much less aggressive herb than the more common sweet basil, the foremost flavor note is lemon!

Try one, I think you'll like it! If not you can use the martini as a marinade for the chicken or fish!

MARTINI SMOOTHIES - Blueberry, Raspberry, Banana

The Blueberry Smoothie-tini - Let's just call this the anti-oxidant martini smoothie!
Rich in healthy flavors of blueberries, raspberries and bananas this is a health nut boozer's dream, lol. If there is such a thing as a health nut boozer - is there?

To really make it healthier substitute plain yogurt for the cream and use honey instead of sugar - you'll never know the vodka's in there unless you have one too many! But you're not going to do that because you're healthy, right!

Enjoy and Cheers to having a great weekend!
