MARTINI BARS - Going out for a martini can be fun too!

You know, sometimes I like to have someone else make a martini for me. I might be lazy or just feeling the need to be pampered but whatever the reason it's always nice to have a martini just plopped down in front of you ready to drink!

Since I live in Arizona and I travel around a bit doing my art shows I have discovered some great places for a martini. Here's a few of my faves:

PHOENIX AREA:

Furio's - the first place I tasted a S'More Martini!
7210 E. Second St., Scottsdale
(480) 945-6600

Amsterdam - a Medievel themed alternative lifestyle bar where you can get a martini and a manicure - both for $5 each on Mondays! At least the last time I was there. Tried my first Pineapple Upside Down Martini here while getting my nails done!
718 N. Central Ave., Phoenix
(602) 258-6122

SEDONA

Szechuan Restaurant & Martini Bar - conveniently located across the street from one of my art show locations, ideal after a hard day of selling art - Great food to go with your 'tini!
1350 W Hwy 89A #21
Sedona, AZ 86336
www.szechuansedona.com

L'Auberge de Sedona - The restaurant sits right on Oak Creek and in the summer you sit outdoors and listen to the flowing water in an elegant setting while you sip your martini - one of my favorite "get away from it all" spots! And they have special hours just for h'ors d'oeuvres! Talk about heaven!
301 L'Auberge Lane
800-272-6777

If you have a favorite martini bar in your area let me know and I'll post it! I'll even start a special page for Martini Bars where you can post your critiques!

Happy Cocktail Hour!

DESSERT IN A MARTINI GLASS - ENGLISH TRIFLE

Martini glasses are perfect for serving trifles. A classic English Trifle is traditionally served in a see-through clear glass serving bowl or dish so the layers can be appreciated! Just take any trifle recipe and spoon into a martini glass instead of a larger glass bowl.

Ingredients:
1 Sponge Cake, Pound Cake or 1 package of lady fingers
1-1/2 cups of sliced fresh fruits
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of sherry
3 - 4 cups of whipped cream
3 cups of cooked custard - Bird's English Custard is traditional
Reserve some of the fresh fruit for garnish
Optional Garnishes: Edible flowers, mint leaves

Place the sponge or pound cake or lady fingers in the bottom of the martini glass. Top with a layer of the fresh fruit (traditional English trifles actually use fruit jams), then sprinkle on a heaping tablespoon of sugar and drizzle on some sherry. Spoon in a layer of the cooked and cooled custard. Top with the whipped cream and garnish with a few pieces of the fruit and the optional garnishes. Chill the glasses for an hour before serving. Enjoy!

FOR A CHOCOLATE TRIFLE: Substitute chocolate cake for the sponge/pound cake/lady fingers, substitute Kahlua for the sherry, substitute chocolate pudding for the custard and sprinkle crushed Heath bars instead of sugar on top of the cake. You can leave in the fruits or remove them for this chocolate variation. You can also use chocolate whipped cream in place of the plain whipped cream!

SASSY STRAWBERRY MARTINI

THE SASSY STRAWBERRY MARTINI HERE

Spring has sprung and that means beautiful, gorgeous fresh strawberries! I love strawberries. I buy them in flats when they're good and make Chocolate Covered Strawberries.
One person can't eat a whole flat of strawberries (though I try) so I will freeze half the flat just for use in my Strawberry Martinis and Strawberry Coladas later when strawberries aren't in season.

Fortunately they are in season right now and they're good for detoxing the blood so go forth and have a decadent day of delicious strawberries and strawberry martinis!

A NEW MARTINI TIP - STUFFED OLIVES and VERMOUTH OLIVES!

I have a friend who loves stuffed olives - he will eat just about anything if you stuff it in a green olive and put it in a Classic Martini!

I've made a practice of coming up with some great stuffed olives for him. They also serve as great appetizers for my other cocktail hour guests so I get a two-fer out of the deal!
