SLEEPY HOLLOW COCKTAIL, A Rattled Skull

Rattled-Skull Colonial Cocktail
for Sleepy Hollow Heads

My Sleepy Hollow inspired version of this early American drink is based on an authentic cocktail recipe from colonial days known as the Rattle-Skull which was traditionally made with rum, brandy and Porter Ale. Since hard cider was also a favorite drink of our forefathers (and I'm not a big fan of beer with rum) I have replaced the Porter with hard cider.

I diverted from the original recipe a bit more by replacing the plain brandy with Calvados, a particularly smooth apple brandy, then adding a dash of apple bitters to balance the sweetness of the cider.

If you want to cut down on the head-chopping power of this libation, you can use non-alcoholic cider, but don't leave out the rum or you risk the wrath of the Headless Horseman who was well known to be a lover of rum . . . at least when his mouth still led to his stomach. If you leave out the Calvados you just deserve to lose your head...

Ingredients
3/4 Oz. Dark Rum
1/2 Oz. Calvados
6 Oz. Hard Cider
3 Drops of Apple Bitters
Juice of Half a Lime
Slice of Apple
Twist of Lime

Directions
Add some ice to a chilled skull glass. Pour in the rum and Calvados. Add the bitters and the lime juice, then pour in the cider and stir until chilled. Twist the lime over the cocktail to express the oils, garnish with the apple slice and enjoy while you ogle that sexy version of Ichabod Crane - but don't lose your head over him.

"First I shot him, then he rose back up. Cutting off his head seemed the next logical step." ~ Ichabod Crane, Sleepy Hollow pilot.

MARTINI COCKTAIL ART

This MARTINI ART is my fourth illustration in a group of Cocktail Party Art "separates".   Like Shotz!, Margarita and Psychedelic Cocktail, I separated out the martini from the Cocktail Up group and turned it into an individual design. As always with my art, MARTINI is available on all sorts of fun Art & Products, all perfect gifts for holidays, birthdays, Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties and Cocktail Parties and Events.

I really got creative with the Martini T-shirts by adding some fun captions (which you can customize to your heart's content!):

As always, you can get MARTINI on

(Like adding a name, customizing for a Bachelor or Bachelorette Party, putting on your favorite cocktail quote - you can even add your own photos!)

DROWN YOUR TROUBLES MARTINI for Haven Fans

Got The Troubles and no Duke, Audrey or Nathan anywhere in the vicinity? Take heart, a little booze goes a long way to ease The Troubles!!!

DROWN YOUR TROUBLES MARTINI
for SyFy's HAVEN Fans

 3 Oz. Bourbon
1/2 Cup Fresh Blackberries
2 Tbsp. Powdered Sugar
3 Drops Blackberry Bitters
1 Tbsp. Fresh Lime Juice
Blackberries for Garnish

Chill your glass in the freezer.  Put the blackberries, powdered sugar and lime juice in the bottom of a cocktail shaker and muddle until nice and juicy.  Add one cup of ice, pour in the bourbon, add the blackberry bitters and shake until well chilled.  Strain into a chilled martini glass, spear some of the blackberries on a cocktail pick, drop in then dust top of cocktail with a bit of powdered sugar and drown The Troubles!

Why did I list Duke before Audrey?? Because he's my favorite character - he owns a BAR for Pete's sake!!!! And maybe a little because of this:

Haven airs 10/9C on Fridays at SyFy.

Again, I'm having some fun with the Margarita T-shirts by adding some fun captions (which you can customize to your heart's content!):

SONS of ANARCHY COCKTAIL - The Bloody Boilermaker

THE SONS of ANARCHY
BLOODY BOILERMAKER
(Beer, Patron, Blood and Mayhem)

INGREDIENTS
4 Oz. Patron Silver Tequila
(Have you seen another tequila brand at SAMCRO??? Me either!)
8 Oz. Mexican Beer
(Gotta mix up up with the Mayans, just like the SOA)
3 Oz. Tomato Juice "Blood"
(To signify the Men of Mayhem patch)
3 Tsp. Cholula Chipotle Sauce
3 Drops Tabasco
(Yes, I said 3 of both hot sauces, to paraphrase Piney, "Grow a Pair")
1 Tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
2 Oz. Fresh Lime Juice
Kosher Salt

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

12 Oz. Skull Glass
2 - 2  Oz. Skull Shooters
(Mine are courtesy of Crystal Head Vodka, sorry Dan, but they work for tequila as well as Crystal Head Vodka!)
2 Pipettes

DIRECTIONS
  • Mix the tomato juice, chipotle sauce, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce together then freeze in a container to a 1/2" thickness.
  • When your tomato "blood" is frozen solid smash it into chunks and set back in the freezer until you're ready to construct your drink. The frozen "blood" will form a platform for your Skull Shooter.
  • Rim your skull glass with lime juice then dip in the kosher salt and chill in the freezer.
  • Fill the 2 pipettes with fresh lime juice.
  • Add your tomato "blood" to your chilled glass.
  • Settle your Skull Shooter onto the "blood" platform and fill with the chilled Patron.
  • Gently pour the ice cold beer around the shooter.
  • Fill the second Skull Shooter with more Patron and slide in the second lime filled pipette.
  • Serve both on something black decorated with some really bad-ass looking skulls. (My background was a tee shirt given to me by a biker friend.)
  • Sit back to enjoy SONS of ANARCHY!

STAR TREK INSPIRED COCKTAILS 2 - Booze! The Final Frontier!

Today is the yearly anniversary of the television debut of the original Star Trek series, now known as Star Trek TOS.  The first episode aired on September 8th, 1966 and I was there to watch it and every single episode and movie in the whole Star Trek franchise since. Yes, I am a Trekkie....but I'm a Trekkie with a very well stocked bar.....

To mark the occasion I am again posting up some fun Federation and Non-Federation Libations for my fellow Trekkies.  Last year's Star Trek Cocktails were a blast to come up with and they were inspired mostly by the main characters of the Starship Enterprise.

This year I was primarily inspired by all the alien booze that made it's way into the 23rd Century. Like last year, these are all my own personal concoctions, created to meet my own concepts of what these cosmic cocktails might actually taste like - with a little bit of garnishing humor thrown in.

ROMULAN ALE
(prohibited by the Federation but smuggled into space by Captains and culprits alike.)

BLOODWINE
(The favorite vintage of Klingons)

3 Oz. Red Wine
1/2 Cup Fresh Blackberries
2 Tbsp. Powdered Sugar
1 Tbsp. Fresh Lime Juice
Black Cherry Gummy Worm (Gagh)

Chill a large wine glass in the freezer.  Put the blackberries, powdered sugar and lime juice in the bottom of a cocktail shaker and muddle until nice and juicy.  Add 1 cup of ice, pour in the wine and shake until well chilled.  Strain into your chilled glass filled with ice, hang the black cherry gagh worm on the rim and ....enjoy?

TRANYA
(From The Corbomite Maneuver)

2 Oz. Light Rum
1 Oz. Apricot Brandy
Splash of Triple Sec
1 Oz. Orange Juice
Splash of Pineapple Juice
Few Drops of Grenadine
Star fruit slice

Chill a stemless martini glass in the freezer. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then pour in the rum, apricot brandy, triple sec, orange juice and pineapple juice and shake until chilled.  Strain into your glass, add the grenadine and garnish with the star fruit slice.

ANDORIAN ALE
(a little acidic and a lot blue, just like the Andorians)

1/4 Oz. Raspberry Vodka
1/4 Oz. Blue Curacao
1/4 Oz. Lime Juice
1/4 Oz. Triple Sec
1 Blue Raspberry Twizzler, split in half lengthwise

Add ice to a cocktail shaker then pour in the vodka, Blue Curacao, lime juice and triple sec and shake until chilled.  Pour into a shot glass (shooter) then add the blue twizzler Andorian Antennae garnish.

SAURIAN BRANDY
(because we all know lizards just love apples....)

1 Oz. Calvados (Apple Brandy)
2 Oz. Hard Apple Cidar
Splash of Cinnamon Schnapps

Add ingredients to a warmed brandy snifter. Stir gently. Beware.

And because I think we need just one more:

WARP PLASMA
(because we all know that warp plasma burns green. . . .)

1 Oz. Vodka
1/2 Oz. Peach Schnapps
1/2 Oz. Blue Curacao
1 Oz. Orange Juice
1 Oz. Sprite
Blue Ice Coils*

Color some water blue then freeze in large straws. Chill martini glass in the freezer.  Add ice to a cocktail shaker then pour in the vodka, peach schnapps, blue curacao and orange juice and shake until chilled. Strain into your chilled martini glass then top off with the Sprite. Warm the frozen "warp coil" ice under warm water and drop into the martini as a chilling garnish.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY STAR TREK & TREKKIES (or Trekkers) and Enjoy!

BEER COCKTAILS

Two Classic Beer Cocktails
THE MICHELADA

12 Oz. Mexican Beer (I used Corona)
Juice of 2 Fresh Limes
1 Tsp. Maggi or Soy Sauce
1 Tsp. Cholula Chipotle Sauce
2 Tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
Lime Slice and Assorted Vegetables for Garnish
 Smoked Artisan Salt
Kosher Salt
Course Ground Pepper

In a plate mix together the salts and the pepper.  Rub the rim of your glass with lime juice then dip in the salt/pepper mixture and place glass in the freezer to chill.  Combine the beer, lime juice, soy or Maggi sauce, Chipotle sauce and Worcestershire sauce in the bottom of your glass, fill glass with ice then slowly add your chilled beer.  Give the mixture a couple of stirs and garnish with the slice of lime and some fun veggies to munch on.

THE LOADED RED EYE
(or Red Beer)
inspired by the movie "Cocktail" with Tom Cruise

This is also known as a Beer Bloody Mary and I have added my requisite Bloody Mary accents. In the traditional Red Eye you simply mix tomato juice with beer and add a raw egg....but that was before all the egg worries of today.  I also like to add a splash of vodka - what can I say?

4 Oz. Tomato Juice
12 Oz. Beer (again I used Corona)
Optionals:
A Splash of Vodka
Worcestershire Sauce
Juice of 1/4 Lemon
Dash of Tabasco
Optional: 1/2 Tsp. of Horseradish Sauce
Celery Salt
Course Ground Pepper
Kosher Salt
Celery Stick
Lemon Slice
Assorted Snack Garnishes

Rim your glass with some lemon then dip into the kosher salt.  Chill your glass. Add the Worcestershire, lemon juice, Tabasco, Celery Salt to your glass, fill half way with ice, pour on the vodka (if you're adding it) then slowly add the beer.  Give the whole kit and caboodle a good stir then grind on your pepper and garnish with the celery stick, lemon slice and some fun munchies on a stick - here I used smoked Gouda wrapped in salami and a nice marinated artichoke heart.

This goes really nicely with my Cheese Crisps (Frico)!

ENJOY & BOTTOMS UP!

Watermelon Rosemary Gin Sour

WATERMELON ROSEMARY GIN SOUR

This is a martini especially for a fellow foodie and Twitter party friend of mine, Susan Irby otherwise known as @TheBikiniChef from The Bikini Lifestyles Show on KABC.  While tweeting back and forth I discovered today is her birthday and she likes gin.

Now Susan is all about the skinny and the healthy and I'm always for skinny and healthy in happy hour so I decided to put a little #SoBikini twist on a Gin Sour and create her a special birthday cocktail.  I took the idea of a gin sour, added some lovely, seasonal fresh fruit in the form of watermelon then added a little punch with some fresh rosemary.

A sour always consists of a base alcohol, some lemon or lime (or sometimes another citric fruit) and sweetener.  Cocktails are often sweetened with sugar or simple syrup but, keeping with the healthy, I used honey instead.  Honey brings the sweet but it also brings some great health benefits to a cocktail, as does the watermelon and the rosemary.  I figure if you're going to be happy at happy hour, being healthy makes that a whole lot easier!

So, a very happy birthday to you, Susan and Slàinte!

RECIPE

1/2 C. Watermelon, Pureed
2 Oz. Gin
2 Tbsp. Honey, Warmed
Juice of 1/2 a Lime
Rosemary Sprig + Few Leaves
Slice of Watermelon
Slice of Lime
Ice

Chill your glass in the freezer. Warm the honey for a few seconds in the microwave. Muddle a few leaves of rosemary with the lime and honey in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add ice to the shaker, pour in the gin and stir. Add the watermelon puree then give it all a gentle stir, strain into your chilled glass, garnish with the rosemary, lime and slice of watermelon and enjoy!
