A Father's Day Cocktail & Quote to Share with Your Dad

Tomorrow is Father's Day and what better way to celebrate with your Dad than sit down and have a few cocktails with him and listen to his stories?  Shake up a few of these Father's Day Martinis (aka Whiskey Sours) and sit down and talk to your father like a person and not a parent.  You might be surprised at some of the things you learn and you'll be glad you spent the time getting to know the man inside the father costume!

FATHER'S DAY COCKTAILS

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.  But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."  ~ Mark Twain

RASPBERRY AND BLACKBERRY MARTINI - Razzed Up

http://themartinidiva.com

This is another great fresh blackberry martini.  I did one last week - The Blackberry Bramble Martini - with strawberries and a pinch of tarragon.  Today's Razzed Blackberry Martini combines fresh blackberries with equally fresh raspberries and just a tad of rosemary for a win/win cocktail / health scenario.

Fresh blackberries rival blueberries for health benefits. Raspberries bring their own goodies to the party as well so it's kind of a guilt free party you're attending here.

Take note of the fun I had with the sugar rim - half pink and half black.  Just because.

The
RAZZED BLACKBERRY MARTINI

INGREDIENTS
1-1/2 Oz. Vodka
1/2 C. Fresh Blackberries
1/2 C. Fresh Raspberries
1 Tbsp. Lime Juice
1  Tbsp. Agave Syrup
Pinch of Fresh Rosemary
1/2 Oz. Club Soda

Garnish: Pink Sugar & Black Sugar Rim, Fresh Raspberries and Blackberries

DIRECTIONS
Dip the glass rim into lime juice then into the sugar to rim.
Chill glass in freezer.
Muddle the blackberries, raspberries, lime juice, agave syrup and rosemary in the bottom of your cocktail shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice then pour in the vodka and shake until well blended.
Strain into your martini glass, leaving room for the soda.
Top off with the soda then garnish.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE MARTINI Cocktail Recipe

Strawberry Shortcake Martini Cocktail Recipe

Put down your fork and grab a martini glass and enjoy your strawberry shortcake in true martini style with my recipe for The Strawberry Shortcake Martini.

A LITTLE SHORTCAKE HISTORY
Strawberry shortcake* dates back as least as far as the 1850s but shortcake itself is a European treat that goes back to the 1500s.  Shortcake got it's name from the shortening used to make dough tender. Shortening is a term that means "to shorten" a 15th century term which meant, "easily crumbled" so a traditional shortcake was originally a crumbly biscuit.  Shakespeare even mentioned shortcake in his play, The Merry Wives of Windsor.

* HOMEMADE SHORTCAKES RECIPE
I've used shortbread cookies as the rimming element here to make it easier for you to bring the shortcake element in, however if you would like to bring a little more historical authenticity to this cocktail try making some real shortcakes instead!  Here is my favorite Strawberry Shortcake recipe using Bisquick® from Betty Crocker:

2-1/3 C. Bisquick® Mix
1/2 C. Milk
3 Tbsp. Sugar
3 Tbsp. Butter

Heat oven to 425°F.  In a medium bowl mix together the Bisquick, milk, sugar and butter until a dough forms.  On an ungreased cookie sheet drop the dough with a spoon into six separate rounds and bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.  You can split the shortcakes and fill and top with sugared strawberries then top with whipped cream, or pour on half & half.

Happy National Peanut Butter Cookie Day

Why eat your peanut butter cookie when you can drink it in a martini glass?  The added benefit of drinking your peanut butter cookie? It won't stick to the roof of your mouth!

You also won't have to press a criss-cross pattern across the top, and, just in case you were wondering why it's traditional to put those criss-cross fork marks on a peanut butter cookie, here's two possible explanations:
  • They were put there to distinguish the cookie from others for those with peanut allergies
  • They were simply done in the beginning as an aid to make the cookie bake crisper as well as hold the dough together during baking.
Not that that matters with my Peanut Butter Cookie Martini - unless you're serving it up with peanut butter cookies.

So, go ahead and indulge, not every day is a peanut butter cookie holiday.

LONG ISLAND ICED TEA Cocktail Recipe

Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail Recipe

 June 10th is
NATIONAL ICED TEA DAY
and no one said you couldn't add a little spirit!

It's a perfect time of year for iced tea.  It's summer, it's hot and iced tea is refreshing on a sultry day.  You just want to sit out on the porch in a rocking chair with a tall glass while you contemplate the birds and the bees.

But maybe not this particular recipe for "iced tea".

It does taste like iced tea and therein lies the danger. It tastes like iced tea, it looks like iced tea, but you are swilling down a big honking glass of almost pure booze.

Very sneaky and very dangerous and a cocktail to be very cautious with, but as long as you stay safely on your porch just contemplating the birds and bees you might be safe.
