BUBBLE GUM COCKTAILS

http://themartinidiva.com

Grab Your Bazooka and Double your Bubble fun, it's time to remember the good old days of bubble gum cigars, Bazooka Joe and Double Bubble Comics. Here's two really fun, playful martinis if you're inclined to sweet drinks, and they do have that haunting taste.

My first recipe is made with vodka, peach schnapps and cola. After Three Olives came out with it's bubble gum flavored vodka I did a remix with some half & half for a creamy version I called the Bubble Gum Martini Opus Two.

These would be really fun for a baby shower party.  Grenadine will make them pink or you can leave out the grenadine and color them blue with some butterfly pea flower powder or essence or some food coloring. Garnish with a matching bubble gum cigar.

A HISTORY of HAPPY HOUR for NATIONAL HAPPY HOUR DAY

THE HISTORY of HAPPY HOUR
for
NATIONAL HAPPY HOUR DAY

The term "Happy Hour" actually has it's roots in Navy slang from the 1920s, where the time for the scheduled period of entertainment on-ship was referred to as the happy hour. After the Volstead Act (aka The National Prohibition Act) was instituted in 1919, Speakeasies adopted the term for the hours patrons arrived to drink illegal cocktails before eating at restaurants that observed the prohibition.  The term then began to be applied to the consumption of illegal liquor before dining at home as well.

Happy Hour really kicked into gear after an article in 1960s Saturday Evening Post where the Navy's scheduled entertainment time was mentioned. Bars and restaurants jumped onto the concept to increase alcohol sales prior to dinner service. The profit margin from liquor is considerably higher than from food service and restaurants saw this as a way to boost their bottom lines.

Typically held between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Happy Hour evolved into an after work event where co-workers would get together at the end of a work day to socialize and relieve stress.  Every local tavern and popular restaurant boasted a happy hour of sorts, often offering cocktails at a discount for those hours.

In the 1970s many establishments began offering free h'ors d'oeuvres to it's Happy Hour patrons. Some say this was in response to the tougher drunk driving laws being instituted and vigorously enforced. The consumption of food can slow the absorption of alcohol a bit, but I suspect the addition of free food was more likely a way to draw more customers during the lull before the dinner rush. In response to the same anti drunk driving campaign, the military banned the use of the term "Happy Hour" at military base clubs.

Far from curbing enthusiasm for Happy Hour, the addition of free or discounted food made it even more attractive and Happy Hour became an institutionalized after work cocktail party. Every weekday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. cocktail fans gather to enjoy their favorite spirits, munch on a few tidbits and decompress from the rigors of their 9 to 5 workday.  Happy Hour is here to stay.

TOASTED MARSHMALLOW MARTINI Cocktail Recipe

I don't know who first thought up the idea of toasting marshmallows but whoever it was changed camping forever.  You can't go anywhere near a campfire without a bag of marshmallows and a knife to whittle a few toasting sticks.  It's sacrilegious not to have at least one gooey, sticky chunk of burnt sugary goodness if you're sitting by a crackling wood fire.

Whoever it was, thank you.  We lift our cocktail glasses and a hold a marshmallow covered stick over flames in your honor today.

Toasted Marshmallow Martini Recipe with Ingredients and Instructions

The
TOASTED MARSHMALLOW
MARTINI

INGREDIENTS
1 Oz. Marshmallow Vodka
1 Oz. Bailey's Irish Cream
1 Oz. Frangelico
1/2 Oz. of Half & Half
Pinch of Sea Salt

GARNISH
Toasted Mini Marshmallows

DIRECTIONS
Chill your glass. Place several of the mini marshmallows on the skewers and toast them over the stove burner, a small candle, or torch them with a kitchen torch to caramelize them to a nice golden brown. Set this aside.
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with 1 cup of ice and shake until well chilled.
Pour into your chilled glass, garnish with your toasted marshmallows and serve.

VOICEOVER VIDEO WITH INGREDIENTS AND DIRECTIONS:

If you want to have a real Cocktail Campfire experience, let your guests toast their own marshmallow garnishes.  Set out a bowl of mini marshmallows, a handful of the bamboo skewers and a small votive candle for each guest and let them toast their own garnish!

The History of Marshmallows:
Though today's marshmallow is a sweet confection made up of sugar, corn syrup, water and gelatin, the marshmallow plant itself was used throughout the world as a source for some form of sweet.  The marshmallow plant was also used throughout history as a medicinal substance, primarily as a remedy for sore throats.

The first historical reference to marshmallows comes from the ancient Egyptians who, in addition to using the root combined with honey for sore throats, also extracted the sap which they mixed with nuts and honey for a sweet candy.

The traditional marshmallow recipe uses powdered marshmallow root which is difficult to obtain so most marshmallow manufacturers use gelatin or agar in place of the actual plant root.

AUGUST 30th is National Toasted Marshmallow Day.
