THE BANANA CREAM PIE MARTINI

This Banana Martini tastes just like a liquid banana pie - it's creamy and brimming with banana flavor. It's a perfect dessert martini and a lot easier than baking an actual banana cream pie.

HISTORY OF THE SUGAR COOKIE
Today's version of the sugar cookie most likely is descended from a cookie like pastry from Europe in the Middle Ages called a Jumble (or jumbals, crybabies, plunkets and gemmels).  Jumbles were made from flour, eggs, nuts and sugar with a little flavoring like vanilla, or anise and were shaped into knots or rings. These were dense, somewhat dry and compact treats that traveled well as they could last for up to a year.

A very common sweet throughout Europe since the Middle Ages, they probably came over to America with the earliest pilgrims. Around the mid 1700s settlers in the German Protestant area of Nazareth in Pennsylvania created a recipe called the Nazareth Sugar Cookie which incorporated eggs and leavening agents and were rolled out and cut into shapes. This is probably the closet relative to what we think of as sugar cookies today.

National Sugar Cookie Day is July 9th.

VANILLA WAFER COOKIE MARTINI - Cookie Martinis

THE VANILLA WAFER COOKIE MARTINI

I'm sure we all remember vanilla wafers from childhood - those crisp little brown cookies with a big vanilla taste. Even as a kid you could eat them in one bite. My biggest memory of them was having them in banana pudding and banana cream pie. In my house we called them "nilla" wafers which just happens to be the trademark name of Nabisco's brand.

Vanilla wafers are a big part of pop culture having been around since forever - or at least since my forever, lol - I can't remember a time we didn't have a box of them in our cupboard. I'm not a big lover of store bought cookies but vanilla wafers are in the top three I will eat, along with Oreos and Animal Crackers and I still enjoy them with a simple glass of milk.

The Vanilla Wafer Martini is as simple as those ageless golden cookies - just equal parts of Amaretto and vanilla vodka with a rim of real crushed vanilla wafers to give you that cookie crunch. I sometimes garnish it with a full Vanilla Bean Pod but I recently discovered Pepperidge Farm Vanilla Pirouette Cookies on Amazon and those are a fully edible garnish alternative that not only taste good but work as a straw!
