Memorial Day Martini - A Red, White & Blue Martini

Buy the full sized recipe card for the
MEMORIAL DAY MARTINI HERE

The MEMORIAL DAY MARTINI is truly a red, white and blue colored martini. If properly done it will actually layer into shades of red and blue.

One of the ingredients is Grenadine, a red pomegranate syrup, which is heavy enough to sink to the bottom of a glass if used in conjunction with lighter weight spirits. Then I used an unusual liqueur called Hpnotiq for the blue color. Hpnotiq is made with tropical fruits, cognac and vodka so I paired it with a mango vodka to keep with the tropical flavors. Garnish with a few blueberries and a couple of Maraschino cherries on a fun American flag martini pick and you have a nicely patriotic martini!

Memorial Day weekend is a time when many people plan parties, have barbecues, take short trips and enjoy the long holiday. It's a good time for that because it's Spring and we're all ready for some fresh air and warm sun, but this is the holiday for remembering those who died in defense of our rights to enjoy our parties and our freedoms. So, while you're enjoying the long holiday weekend please take time to remember those gave their lives to preserve our freedom to enjoy weekends like this and toast to their sacrifice.

Please drink responsibly, don't drive under the influence and be safe this holiday weekend.

Happy Memorial Day.

The Sex and the City PINK GRAPEFRUIT MARTINI

This Pink Grapefruit Martini is my own cocktail tribute to SEX and the CITY. I loved that series and wanted something to represent the best qualities of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte (Sassy, Sweet, Smart and Saucy) and was inspired by a delicious ruby red grapefruit drink called The Ruby* which popped up in Episode 12 of Season 4 in "Just Say Yes".

The Ruby uses simply Citron Vodka and fresh ruby red grapefruit juice whereas I used grapefruit vodka  and a little lime juice with the grapefruit juice for this recipe. This makes the Pink Grapefruit Martini kind of a grapefruit version of the classic SATC cocktail, the Cosmopolitan.

I have fallen in love with this sassy and refreshing martini and I think that the girls would love this cocktail as well. It has a sophistication and flair that anyone would love. I think Mr. Big might even like this one.

Sex, Cities and Martinis - The PINK FLIRTINI

Here's a fun SEX and the CITY inspired cocktail called The PINK FLIRTINI. Supposedly this martini was developed for "SEX and the CITY" actress Sarah Jessica Parker by a bartender at Guastavino's in NYC. Whether or not that's true is a mute point - it is definitely a "SEX and the CITY" kind of drink because it has all the sass of the Samantha, the sweetness of Charlotte, the tartness of Miranda and the flair of Carrie, plus it's a pink of the SATC Flirtini.

The Pink Martini is a great cocktail for a "SEX and the CITY" marathon. It's not too heavy on the alcohol so you can have more than one and it's just the drink you want in your hand when you binge watch the adventures of Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha.

The FLIRTINI COCKTAIL of Sex and The City Fame

FLIRTINI COCKTAIL RECIPE

There are quite a few versions of The Flirtini floating around out there in the Big City. Some add a little Cointreau, a few use cranberry juice instead of pineapple juice (PINK Flirtini) and the measurements differ from recipe to recipe, but, the "Official Flirtini" recipe - according to this clip directly from the "Sex and the City" episode "Cock-A-Doodle-Do" consists of vodka, pineapple juice and champagne - no measurements mentioned.

This is a slightly tart version of a Pineapple Mimosa with a little extra alcohol content from the vodka.

The Sex and the City DIRTY ******* MARTINI

In a wonderful scene on "Sex and the City" Samantha gets the ultimate revenge on her "dirty bastard" - she throws the Dirty Martini he ordered for her in his face.

This tickled me so much I had to create The Dirty Bastard Martini in honor of Samantha (see video below). The Dirty Bastard Martini is a Dirty Martini but instead of green olives and green olive juice you use black olives and black olive juice (for the black hearts of those bad boys out there who break hearts.)

The Sex and the City COSMOPOLITAN

When you think Sex and the City and cocktails what do you think of?
That's right, The Cosmopolitan or Cosmo as many refer to it.  That classic vodka and cranberry drink served up in a martini glass has became as synonymous with SATC as Manolo Blahnik's and Mr. Big.  The drink was so ubiquitous throughout the HBO series it should have had a screen credit!

Charlotte, “This is delicious.”
Miranda, “Why did we ever stop drinking these?”
Carrie, “Because everyone else started.”

Yes, the Sex and the City Cosmopolitan made it's comeback in the first SATC movie and here is the a version that can be made from any standard home bar because this recipe uses Triple Sec for the orange liqueur but feel free to substitute the original Cointreau if you have it!

For the currently most accepted recipe check out this Classic Cosmopolitan recipe.

The SEX and the CITY COCKTAILS

http://themartinidiva.com

The iconic HBO series Sex and the City, based on the 1997 book of the same name by Candace Bushnell, was all about single women, iconic fashion, designer shoes, a rotating carousel of men and - of course - cocktails, cocktails and more cocktails. From 1998 to 2004 my friends and I (and millions of other American women) sat in front of our TV sets on Sunday nights and watched 22 minutes of  pure, unadulterated female programming and loved every minute of it.  Then we were treated to 2 movies in 2008 and 2010.

 "I couldn't help but wonder . . ."
was there ever an episode that didn't have a cocktail in it? From Champagne to shooters, Martinis to Flirtinis and beer at ballgames to rooftop trashcan punches, cocktails showed up as often as Carrie's shoe fetish and Samantha's libido. If you ask me, they should have given booze a screen credit.

"I'd like a cheeseburger, please, large fries .... and a Cosmopolitan?"
Of course, the most iconic cocktail associated with Sex and the City is the Cosmopolitan. In fact, SATC single handedly pushed the Cosmo into an iconic cocktail. But it wasn't the only alcohol Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha tossed back in 94 television episodes and 2 movies.  Below are a few classics and a few of my own personal Sex and the City inspired drinks.

Chocolate Malt Martini - Ice Cream Martinis Continued

Buy the recipe card for the
 CHOCOLATE MALT MARTINI HERE

I recently posted several ice cream and popsicle inspired martinis inspired by some of my favorite childhood frozen treats. The whole episode got me on an ice cream kick so I've decided to add a couple more this week based on my current ice cream favorites, Chocolate Malts, Banana Splits and Hot Fudge Sundaes. If I go to an ice cream parlor these are the three things I customarily order.

Today is the Chocolate Malt Martini. I do Chocolate Martinis often and I always have a jar of chocolate malt powder in my cupboard to make chocolate malts. I decided to do some experimenting with that chocolate malt powder.

The first recipe I tried had Bailey's Irish Cream in it instead of the vanilla vodka. Nope, that didn't work - the Bailey's overpowered the flavor of the malt powder even with the malt ball rim! Then I decided to try the vanilla vodka to pump up the vanilla ice cream component and, bingo, a lovely Chocolate Malt Martini!

This is a fun and playful treat that will truly impress your happy hour guests and it's also a great way to serve dessert - Enjoy!

Find a Martini Bar - Eat a Chocolate Olive (Cholive!)

Just a couple of little martini things that might be of interest to you, my fellow martini lovers:

Help, I'm in Kuala Lumpur and I need a Martini!

I've just been introduced to a great blog that is listing and reviewing martini bars throughout the world, World Martini Cocktail Review. If you're traveling about the world and need your martini fix this could be a helpful tool! Wouldn't you like to know where you can get a martini in Brussels or Bangkok or Barcelona? Check it out and help Fabio rate some of the martinis and the bars!

Meet Cholive - A Chocolate Olive!

You heard me right - a company has now come up with a chocolate truffle in the shape of an olive made just for garnishing cocktails! This little delicacy is basically a chocolate covered truffle, a creamy ganache filling in a chocolate shell, but the kicker here is they look like chocolate olives and they come with their own nifty, though unusual, little martini picks - you hang the pick on the rim of the glass so the chocolate hangs outside the martini.

They cost between a dollar each and half a dollar each depending on how may you buy. Check out the Cholive here.

I kinda wish I'd thought of this. . . .

Check This Out - EDIBLE MARTNIS, What a Concept!

I found this video yesterday on how to make Edible Martinis! What an amazing idea - now I want a vacuum machine! Oh, the fun I could have!

I would probably use vodka instead of gin as I'm not all that fond of gin in most cases. BTW, I do agree that if you don't put vermouth in a gin martini it's not really a martini!

Here's my recipe for a Cucumber Martini, which I enjoyed last night to use up my cucumbers before they went bad:

Firecracker Popsicle Inspired Martini - The POP-A-TINI

The POP-A-TINI is a raspberry, lemon and cherry martini inspired by Popsicle's Firecracker® popsicles. The flavor profile of this martini is based on those same raspberry, cherry and lemon flavors. For the fun blue color of the raspberry part of the popsicle I've used Blue Curacao which adds just a touch of orange/citrus.

The popularity of Blue Bunny's Bomb Pop® (Bomb Pop Martini link below!) inspired a bunch of red, white and blue popsicles with similar flavor profiles but the two most popular were the Bomb Pop and the Firecracker®. Bomb Pop used lime where the Firecracker used lemon. I always found it interesting that growing up in the "atomic age" we had so many explosive icre cream and candy treats! ICE CREAM MARTINI - Banana Fudgesicle Martini!

This one is entirely for me - The BANANA FUDGESICLE MARTINI!
I loved Banana Fudgesicles when I was a kid but Popsicle® quit making them. Yes, I have seen what some call a banana fudgesicle but it is not the same!! Not as creamy and it doesn't have that artificial banana flavoring that just tickles my fancy.

Since I was diddling around with creating ice cream martinis that reminded me of some of my favorite frozen confections as a kid I decided that I would create my own adult version of the Banana Fudgesicle. It's not exactly the same thing because alcohol won't freeze, but it's pretty darn close and it suits my adult palate, especially at cocktail hour.

So, for all my fellow Banana Fudgesicle fanatics out there - this one's for you as well as me, because even though we have no Banana Fudgesicles anymore we now have the BANANA FUDGESICLE MARTINI:

The BOMB POP MARTINI - A retro, adult taste that takes you back to your childhood!

As I mentioned yesterday in my Creamsicle Martini post, I have been having some fun with martinis inspired by the ice cream treats of my youth. All this was started by a rare visit on my street of The Ice Cream Truck!

Today I give you the BOMB POP MARTINI - a really delicious concoction of raspberry rum, cherry vodka and limeade that captures those nostalgic flavors of the Bomb Pop frozen treat from the fifties and sixties. You can now enjoy that wonderful retro ice cream bar with a little more sophistication and an adult kick in this martini!

All these "atomic" named retro treats got me thinking about growing up in a nuclear world, the cold war and how we named some of those space age treats. For a little history on the goodies that inspired this series of martinis and how they got their names read my post on Ice Cream Nostalgia and the Cold War.

ICE CREAM MARTINI - The Creamsicle Martini

http://themartinidiva.com

A few days ago I heard something I haven't heard in ages, I heard that distinctive sound of the ice cream truck coming down my road! I used to love the ice cream man when I was a kid and, like every other kid on my block, I'd run into the house to pester my Mom for a nickle to buy an ice cream.

Yes, I did run out to the ice cream truck even though I had ice cream in my freezer. I ran out for the sheer nostalgia of it and I ran out to see if they still carried some of my favorites from childhood. I did not run out with a nickle though, I ran out with a ten dollar bill, lol. I don't think there's anything you can get for a nickel anymore except five pennies - besides I planned to buy one of each of my preferred choices as a kid: The Creamsicle, the Astro Pop, the Bomb Pop and a Banana Fudgesicle. Alas, they had no banana flavored Fudgesicle but they did have the others!

I enjoyed them so much it got me to thinking about turning the flavors into martinis. Today you get to sample my first Ice Cream Martini recipe. The Creamsicle Martini or Creamsicle Tini will bring back the memories and taste experience of that wonderful mix of orange juice and cream with an adult twist added by the orange vodka and Grand Marnier!

Here's my
ORANGE CREAMSICLE MARTINI RECIPE

Shake up a couple and enjoy the sounds of the Ice Cream Truck:

By the way - The Ice Cream Truck song is "Turkey in the Straw" for all you whipper snappers out there!
