The ANEURYSM, A Whiskey, Peach& Raspberry Halloween Cocktail

"My goodness she's not dead?'

No, I am alive and kicking, but almost!* 😉 I just semi-retired and am concentrating on my art almost exclusively.

But, you know how it is, you still have to have cocktails, don't you?

I have also  been busy with other things, including *operations for aneurysms and silly things like that. However, with Halloween coming up, I decided a cocktail tribute to one of the scariest things I've experienced lately would be appropriate.

Now, this drink may look like my aneurysms exploded (yes, I had more than one, but that's a story for a different day), however, it tastes wonderful being based on The famous Peach Melba dessert recipe. I happen to love those flavors together so I have a few Peach Melba inspired cocktail recipes.

So here she is because the scrambled look of this cocktail is exactly how my brain was after anesthesia.

The
ANEURYSM COCKTAIL
A Halloween Peach Melba Cocktail featuring Whiskey.

INGREDIENTS

1 Tsp Lemon Juice
1 Oz Crown Royal Peach
1 Oz Peach Schnapps
1 Oz Bailey's
1 Splash Chambord

GARNISH:  White Chocolate Dipped Fresh Peach Slice. At Halloween, if you can't get a fresh peach, just use a peach candy slice.

DIRECTIONS

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the lemon juice, the Crown Royal Peach and the peach schnapps and shake until well chilled. Pour this into your chilled cocktail glass. Grab your bar spoon & gently pour the Irish Cream over the top.  Finally, drizzle in the Chambord, DO NOT STIR - IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE UGLY - garnish and enjoy.

PEACH MELBA MARTINI Cocktail Recipe

PEACH MELBA MARTINI Cocktail Recipe

Peach Melba is a classic dessert created by August Escoffier for the Australian opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba. It's a combination of peaches on vanilla ice cream with a Raspberry Coulee (sauce) topped with slivered almonds.

Sadly, it has gone out of vogue as a preferred dessert and that's really a shame because it's absolutely delicious. It's even better as a cocktail. Tart raspberries and sweet, juicy peaches are a beautifully balanced combination complemented by creamy vanilla ice cream and the nutty crunch of toasted almonds and I've done just that below.

PEACH MELBA MARTINI Cocktail with Ingredients and Instructions

The
PEACH MELBA
MARTINI

INGREDIENTS
1 Oz. Peach Vodka
1 Oz. Whipped Cream Vodka
1/2 C. Peach Puree
1 Oz. Half & Half
1/2 Cup Ice

Garnish: Chopped Toasted Almonds on Rim, Whipped Cream, Chambord, Peach Slice, Fresh Raspberries

DIRECTIONS
Dip the glass rim in Chambord then into the chopped almonds. Chill glass in freezer.
Shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker until chilled.
Pour into your chilled cocktail glass.
Top with whipped cream.
Add the peach slice and a few raspberries, drizzle on 1 ounce of Chambord and serve.

BOOZESICLES™ Alcoholic Popsicles - Healthy, Homemade BOOZY ICE POPS

Have you seen those low calorie boozy "Vodka Martini" type ice pops showing up in Costco and other places?

They are a great idea for summer cocktail hour and parties; they're icy cold, refreshing and low ABV (alcohol by volume), which is very popular now and a good idea for hot temperatures. But, at only 100 ml. each (3.4 ounces), they're pricey and it will take a few of them to equal one typical cocktail. They sell for around 3 bucks each and are loaded with artificial coloring, flavoring and sweeteners. Furthermore, at less than 4 ounces each with an 8% ABV, how many would your happy hour guests slurp down at 3 bucks a pop?

You know what I say  about that?
DIY BABY!
You can have healthy, refreshing ice pops galore, and at a price that won't offend your wallet.

LET'S FREEZE SOME ADULT ICE POPS!
Alcohol alone doesn't freeze at normal freezer temperatures but when you mix it with the right amount of non-alcoholic liquid that changes. I've found the formula that works the best is a 1 to 5 alcohol to mixer ratio, using a standard 40 proof spirit. This should give you approximately an 8% ABV ice pop. (Higher ABV spirits will require a higher mixer ratio to freeze, but standard vodka, rum, gin, tequila and whiskies are around 40 proof and some liqueurs even less.)

Each one of the 100 ml. (3.381 ounces) "vodka martini" pops are 100 calories. Homemade 100 ml. cocktail ice pops using fresh juices and purees will end up at or under 100 calories, BUT without the artificial sweeteners, flavors and colorings. If your mixer is tea or coffee that should be even lower. That gives you the same or a lower calorie count of the pre-packaged ice pops but without the artificial ingredients.

BINGO! HEALTHIER, HOMEMADE BOOZESICLE™ ICE POPS that are still low in calories and also meet the popular lower ABV cocktail trend! Because these cocktails are eaten, you can also use a fresh fruit puree instead of a juice and, because the puree includes all the pulp, each homemade ice pop is full of even more vital nutrients and fiber. Homemade alcohol infused ice pops are easy, a lot of fun to make and your choice of frozen cocktail flavors is endless.

Now I ask you, why shell out big bucks for their boring flavors when you can really punch up those ice popsicles for a lot less? Below are just a few of the flavors I came up with for this experiment. I've been chilling with fun ice pop cocktails all week and the rest are headed to a Fourth of July barbecue.*

The Martini Diva's
BOOZESICLE™ ICE POPS

TOOLS
Zipsickle style ice pop freezer bags. I ordered mind on Amazon.
Mixing pitcher, shaker or glass.
Funnel.

BASIC ICE POP DIRECTIONS
1. Add in 1 part of decent but reasonably priced 40% or less ABV spirit and/or liqueur.
2. Then add in at least 4 parts of a non alcoholic liquid like fresh juices or purees, tea, coffee, yogurt. Feel free to add in a splash of lime or lemon juice to brighten things up.
3. Freeze overnight.

I was not so concerned about calorie count as I was about creating healthy, delicious ice pops and used a few things like bitters for complexity and to balance sweetness. I also used homemade grenadine, flavored vodkas, cream of coconut and flavored yogurts to sweeten without adding sugar. However, the bitters were only a dash or two and have almost nil calorie count, the flavored spirits were already accounted for in the liquor ratio and the sweeteners like grenadine or cream of coconut were only around a teaspoon per pop.

MY BOOZESICLE™ FLAVORS
(Remember the 1:5 Booze to Mixer Ratio!)

BERRYTINI: Fresh Blueberry Juice, Fresh Raspberry Juice, Homemade Grenadine, Strawberry Vodka

BLUE LEMON DROP: Fresh Lemon Juice, Vanilla Vodka, Blue Curacao

CAFFÈ  ICED LAIT: Coffee, Irish Cream Liqueur, Scrappy's Chocolate Bitters

CARAMEL APPLETINI: Caramel Vodka, Apple Pucker, Apple Juice

CHERRYTINI: Frozen Dark Cherries, Whipped Cherry Vodka

CREAMSICLE: Orange Vodka, Fresh Orange Juice, Vanilla Yogurt.

DREAMSICLE: Whipped Cream Vodka, Fresh Raspberry Puree, Vanilla Yogurt.

KEY LIME PIE: Key Lime Yogurt, Fresh Lime Juice, Whipped Cream Vodka

MELON: Fresh Cantaloupe Juice, Watermelon Vodka, Scrappy's Grapefruit Bitters

PEACH MELBA: Raspberry Vodka, Peach Puree, Raspberry yogurt, Scrappy's Cardamom Bitters

PINÃ COLADA: Pureed Fresh Pineapple, Cream of Coconut, Coconut Rum

RAZZATINI: Raspberry Vodka, Cointreau, Fresh Raspberries

SOUR APPLE: Apple vodka, Apple Pucker, Apple Juice

SPICY WATERMELON: Watermelon Vodka, Watermelon Juice or Puree, Lime juice, Dash of Hot Sauce.

STRAWBERRY SUNDAE: Strawberry Vodka, Strawberry Puree and Vanilla Yogurt.

You can play with the flavors to suit your taste and just multiply the ingredients to make batches of the each flavor.

* I even made a pile of booze free ones for the children where I just left out the booze. I used some natural food colorings to make the kiddies ice pops in blues, purples and greens to make sure the parents could be sure no little ones got a buzz on.

If you're jonesing to put some berries in your cocktails raspberries are a great choice because they're bursting with delicious healthiness and luscious berry flavor. They also make for a very pretty pink or red drink if you need some color for your next cocktail party or event.

I happen to love raspberries as you will see by the sheer number of raspberry cocktail recipes I've managed to create and consume over the years. There's enough Raspberry Cocktail recipes here to cover the entire month of July, which just happens to be Raspberry Month.

MEMORIAL DAY COCKTAILS

http://themartinidiva.com

Memorial Day (or Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

http://themartinidiva.com

It is also recognized in the U.S. as the beginning of summer, most likely because it was traditionally the day the school year ended. Currently we celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday of May with the Memorial Day celebrations occurring on the weekend just ahead of that.

For me that means, after honoring those among my friends and family who served and sacrificed, sharing the weekend with my remaining family and friends and having a cookout with some refreshing summer cocktails. It is also my signal to start crafting cocktails made with all the lovely, fresh produce and herbs that become abundant in summertime. Over the years, I have created quite a list of original drink recipes perfect for the long, hot days of summer and I've included links to some of my favorites below, as well as some some of the best warm weather drink categories and flavors to keep you cool from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

MORE BEER COCKTAILS

BEER [beer] /bɪər/ noun. An alcoholic beverage made by brewing and fermentation from cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops.

“Most people hate the taste of beer, to begin with. It is, however, a prejudice.” ~ Winston Churchill

Thanks to the huge craft beer movement I have finally learned to enjoy beer. Not the garden variety, watery, canned suds I grew up with, but the beautifully crafted, small batch ales, lagers and stouts that are popping up for sale on a daily basis these days. Thank you, hipsters, I can now enjoy some brewski with the rest of America, albeit a brewski that's been dressed up.

I've discovered raspberry ales, peach lagers, chocolate stouts, apple beer and cherry cola ale, among a few. I now know what IPA (India Pale Ale) and IBU (International Bitterness Units) stands for and my brain doesn't shut down when I hear "hops" or "barley". I've learned the difference between types of beers* and now hunt the beer aisles for the latest hip sixer or growler to hit the market. Who'd a thunk it?!

I can toss back a tallboy with the best of them but I have also discovered beer as a cocktail ingredient. It's a great day when that barley pop you only bought for frat parties and keggers suddenly becomes a delightfully flavorful inspiration for a new drink.

SUMMER COCKTAILS

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
—F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

SUMMER COCKTAILS

As the weather heats up and we slide into summer, our cocktail thoughts turn to cool, refreshing drinks. The kind of drinks you would enjoy while sitting out on an early summer evening watching the sun go down. Tall drinks with lots of ice and summer juices and fizzes that slide down just a little too easy. Tart, fruity drinks loaded with garden fresh goodness. Frozen, slushy, brain-freezing glasses of chillness.
Drinks made with gin and vodka, maybe a little rum or tequila, or perhaps a wine cooler or punch. Coolers, Mojitos, Sangría, Fizzes, Juleps, Collins, Cobblers, Bucks, Rickeys, Smashes. Yeah, like that.

So I've gathered together some of my favorites for you to enjoy this summer. Sit down, get comfy, this is a long list, I drink a lot in summer.

ALCOHOLIC ICE CREAM IS A THING!

ALCOHOLIC ICE CREAM IS A THING!

The UPS guy came a knocking and delivered unto me five, count them, FIVE pints of booze ice cream recently! Three flavors of Frozen Pints Craft Beer Ice Cream and two flavors of Ice Cream Bar liquor ice cream, sitting snugly in their little cooler looking all frosty and tempting. @FrozenPints and I had connected on Twitter and they volunteered (when their production caught up with demand) to send me some samples to taste and to use to create some fun cocktails. That was a few weeks ago and I had completely forgotten they were coming, then - BINGO - a booze and ice cream lovers dream!

The five pints arrived perfectly frozen, packed in their own cooler with dry ice. They were still frozen, not a sign of melting anywhere. And I live in Tucson and it's summer! Plus the handled cooler they came packed in is a cool little dividend. Sadly, I had to put them away, hard as it was, because I wanted time to give them a real taste test and to work out some recipes and, at that particular moment, I was immersed in Daiquiri week recipes.

BUT, naturally, first I grabbed a spoon and immediately tasted each one, even though it was only 10 a.m. I'm no fool, and who can resist boozy ice cream? I really could have polished a whole pint off then and there, but, sadly, I  had to tuck them in the freezer. Man, that was hard. Yeah, okay, I kept sneaking back for little spoonfuls.

So, a few days later there I was with the (somewhat depleted) Frozen Pints and Ice Cream Bar goodies lined up in front of me and five dishes and spoons at hand ready to give serious attention to each flavor. Can I just say, I love my job?

REVIEW OF FROZEN PINTS & ICE CREAM BAR ICE CREAMS:

Ice Cream Bar BOURBON BUTTER PECAN
I made Homemade Toasted Walnut Infused Maple Bourbon and used up my entire first batch pouring it on ice cream so I immediately dug into this one! The first taste you get is the bourbon, which is what you want in bourbon ice cream, but then it mellows as the ice cream melts and the vanilla comes in and kisses your palate. The last burst of flavor is from the chunks of toasted pecans which combine their slight bitterness with the sweetness from the caramel for a really pleasant finish. Best use? Pour in 1 shot of good bourbon, half a shot of cold espresso and a scoop of this into a cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes, shake hard, strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a dusting of espresso powder.

Ice Cream Bar WHITE RUSSIAN
Tastes like a really cold, really creamy White Russian. Best use? Grab a spoon.

Frozen Pints MALTED MILK CHOCOLATE STOUT
Tastes just like a chocolate malt then surprises you with the stout at the end. The malt is at the forefront, nice and creamy and sweet then the sweetness drops down with a little chocolate sliding in, then - bam! - that stout grabs your attention. It's sort of a roller coaster of tastes as you go from one spoonful to the next. Kind of fun. Best Use? Savor with a crisp chocolate wafer cookie or go full tilt boogie and do my Malted Milk Beer Float.

Frozen Pints BROWN ALE CHIP
This is the one I'd keep in the fridge all the time. Interestingly enough, I don't like chocolate chip ice creams, the chips are too large and they're so cold from the ice cream you don't get the full richness of the chocolate. Someone over at Frozen Pints is smart, they made the chips small so as the ice cream melted the chocolate started to melt and you got that dark chocolate hit on your tongue. The brown ale here was a nice tang at the end. Best use? Served up as my Chocolate Chip Beer Float

Frozen Pints PEACH LAMBIC
Right off I wasn't in love, probably because I tasted this right after the White Russian Ice Cream, but on my second go 'round I felt like I was eating a very fresh peach sherbet with a twist of bitterness from the Belgian lambic that complemented the sweetness of the peaches and left a little zing on my tongue. Turns out this ended up my favorite of all, especially after adding Raspberry Ale and turning it into a Peach Melba Beer Ice Cream Float. Seriously, one of the best floats ever! Best use? That Peach Melba Float!

Overall I was really impressed with these alcoholic ice creams. Because of the alcohol they never freeze as solid as regular ice cream which is good because ice cream should never be eaten that cold. This means you can dig right in and fully experience the flavors. Interesting enough, they don't seem to melt any faster than non-alcoholic ice cream. The texture is creamy, smooth with no noticeable ice crystals and they're not whipped full of air for volume and, as a result, don't turn to foam in the mouth. (Cheap aerated ice creams are a particular pet peeve of mine.)

THE FROZEN PINTS ICE CREAM COCKTAILS

CHOCOLATE PORTER BEER FLOAT SHOTS

PEACH MELBA BEER ICE CREAM FLOAT

The REALLY DRUNK BROWN COW Beer Float

I'm not a huge beer drinker and if you would have told me a month ago I'd be not only creating but really enjoying beer ice cream and beer floats I would have looked at you crossways. But I'm a convert. You really can teach an old dog new tricks, especially if you use beer ice cream as a treat! As for the Bourbon and White Russian Ice Creams, all I can say is I'm glad these can't be found at my corner market (yet) or I'd probably end up pulling my fat pants out of storage.

(This is not a monitarily compensated post. I got free ice cream samples and I'm not complaining!)

PEACH MELBA BEER ICE CREAM FLOAT

Thanks to Frozen Pints it's been a beer float kind of week. Wednesday I posted an off-the-cuff recipe for my Really Drunk Brown Cow Beer Float, yesterday I published two recipes for Chocolate Porter Beer Floats and Float Shots and today I'm sharing a really deadly good beer float using Frozen Pint's Peach Lambic Beer Ice Cream and Samuel Smith's Raspberry Ale.

The whole inspiration is from Auguste Escoffier's famous Peach Melba. This is a classic dessert made with peaches, raspberries  and vanilla ice cream which Escoffier created for the famous Australian opera singer Nellie Melba. Once I tasted the Peach Lambic Ice Cream I knew exactly where I was going with it.

Even if you're not a beer lover you'll love this glass full of peach and raspberry ice cream treat.

PEACH MELBA BEER FLOAT

INGREDIENTS:
2 Scoops Frozen Pints PEACH LAMBIC Ice Cream
1 Bottle of Sam'l Smith RASPBERRY ALE
Homemade Raspberry Simple Syrup

GARNISH: 1 Fresh Peach Slice and/or Fresh Raspberries

TOOLS: Pint glass, Ice cream scoop, Straw, Ice cream spoon

DIRECTIONS:
Chill your glass in the freezer a few minutes before hand.
Pour the Sam'l Smith Raspberry Ale down the side of the glass to keep the head minimal.
Scoop out the Peach Lambic Beer Ice Cream and gently slide it into your glass.
Slip the peach slice on the rim then pour the raspberry syrup over the floating scoop of ice cream.
Add your straw and ENJOY!
